# Highlife Music

> Highlife is a West African dance-band genre that originated among coastal brass bands in Ghana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fusing Akan and other local rhythms with European instruments and jazz. It spread to Nigeria from the 1930s–50s, where Bobby Benson, Victor Olaiya and others built a distinct Nigerian scene that also shaped a young Fela Kuti before he created Afrobeat.
